Key concepts: College, Hypnosis and Anxiety

(NaturalNews) A lot is expected of today’s college students. They are under an enormous amount of pressure to succeed in academics. The pressure comes from themselves, parents, professors, and friends. This causes a lot of stress for students. Success in college is a stepping stone to being successful in a career after graduation, so students feel the need to perform at their full potential. It is important for struggling college students to seek help in reducing their stress with natural treatments such as hypnotherapy. For some students, the stress and anxiety of school and academics can become overwhelming. Stress affects students in many different ways. For some students, their grades start to suffer, which can affect their GPA in the long-run. Other students become so overwhelmed by stress that they drop out of college. According to the 2000 census, 50% of the population in the United States over the age of 25 attended college. However, only 60% of those who attended college earned an associate, bachelor, or graduate degree. This means that 40% did not finish college for various reasons. Sapp (1990) studied the role hypnosis plays on treating test-anxiety in college students. The participants in the study were randomly divided into two groups. One group served as the control group and received no form of treatment. The other group received cognitive-behavioral hypnosis. The researcher evaluated the effects of hypnosis in improving academic performance and decreasing test anxiety. Both groups were enrolled in a demanding psychology course. All students were evaluated based on their midterm grade and anxiety levels. The hypnosis group reported a significant reduction in test anxiety and improvement in academic achievement. Both groups were evaluated 6 weeks after the end of the course and the hypnosis group was found to have maintained their hypnosis treatment gains in achievement and reduction in anxiety. Cognitive behavioral hypnosis is a highly effective form of treatment that helps students improve performance and reduce anxiety. Carrese (1998) outlines the benefits of teaching self-hypnosis to college freshman. The researcher describes the steps taught to students, including relaxation techniques and the usage of imagery. Self-hypnosis was able to help the college freshman cope with stress and the pressures of college. Whether cognitive-behavioral hypnosis is used or self-hypnosis is used, hypnotherapy is a very effective form of treating stress and anxiety in college students. Having the ability to better manage stress not only improves their academic performance in college, but will continue to help them cope with stress in other situations throughout their lives. International Women's Day

Friday, March 7th, 2008

On Wednesday this week (5th March) I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a great networking event arranged by Success Network for International Women’s Day.

The theme for this year’s event was ‘Networking and Working Together for Success’. As well as the usual networking opportunities that you might expect, Success Network had worked hard to get together a great line-up of speakers. They included:

  • Keynote speaker, Sue Knight - renowned international consultant and author, who pioneered the use of NLP for people in business and who has been described as ‘bringing the heart and soul to business’.
  • Sharon Connolly - Sharon is a widely known image consultant who has been on national television. She runs the Maximise Group, is founder of the Ladies Who Latte Networking group and partners with Mary Flavelle, entrepreneur and networking queen of Berkshire!
  • Natalie Holliday - speaking about the goal, the challenge and the way to an outstanding sporting achievement - a valuable lesson for all women in business!

Each of these ladies had so much to give, it was both entertaining and inspirational to listen to them as they shared their own experiences with us.

There was a definite theme running through all of the presentations that evening. NLP and coaching in it’s various forms was high on the agenda, giving some great examples of how it might be used and the benefits it can bring. As a Master Practitioner of NLP, I was delighted to hear this, of course, and having Sue Knight have everyone doing some positive visualisation was a lovely way for her to give to the whole group.

Ute mentioned to us that each year they have had this event, it has doubled in size, so all I can say is that, Ute and Mary – you are going to need somewhere much bigger for 2009!

Congratulations to Success Network and all the speakers for such a great evening. As an evening intended to celebrate women’s progress and success in business and inspire us to achieve our full potential – you certainly succeeded!

Anyway, suggest you check it out. It makes it much easier for the leaders of each of the groups to be able to keep in touch of all of their members, so I urge you to at least log into whichever group you visit.

And if you have never been to a LadiesWhoLatte networking event, and think it might be for you, then I highly recommended that you visit the site and find out where your nearest meeting is.

    Fund Raising Shopping Night

    Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

One of the great things about the type of work I do is getting to meet all sorts of really interesting people. Networking is just one of the ways that I have been able to expand the number of people that I know, build relationships and let others know of my business. I have had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful people along the way who as well as building their own businesses, also find the time to do fantastic work raising funds for all sorts of good causes.

This year it has been my pleasure and privilage to be a part of that fund-raising for East Berkshire Women’s Aid (EBWA), a charity for the victims of domestic abuse. Just last week (November 28th) at Maidenhead Rowing Club, I and many others played their part in arranging a Christmas Shopping Evening to raise funds for EBWA. Many people put alot of effort into making it a successful event and although the net total raised is yet to be confirmed, I know that it will go along way in helping this worthwhile charity to continue its much needed work.

On the evening itself, complimentary mince pies and mulled wine were the order of the day to get everyone in the mood on arriving, and each shopper was given a free goody bag when they left. During the evening the main hall was filled with many stalls displaying their wares with some great Christmas gift ideas.

I know that there was much effort put into this event, but what a great way to raise some money for this really good cause – so I want to congratulate everyone for their work.

    Facebook

    Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

Wow, just discovered Facebook. What a wonderful way to waste some time.

It seems a great way to keep in touch with friends and family, or to get reaquainted to those we may have lost touch with over the years. Similar in ways to Friends Reunited – but this is so much better. It is very interactive, allowing the user to add or take away all sorts of items to make your personal page more appealing.

Its definitely brought out the child in me, and I imagine it could be quiet addictive. You have been warned!
