Maternity units 'turn mothers away'

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

I was scanning the internet, as I do, and came across this report on AOL news today. I got me thinking that it really is important for mums-to-be to prepare themselves as best they can for the birth of their baby. It seems that we might not always be able to rely on things going to plan, even with the place we choose to deliver our babies. One thing we can choose, and that is to be as prepared as possible, so that if these unexpected things happen, then we are best able to cope and remain in control.

Report from AOL as follows:

Many English hospitals had to turn away women in labour last year because they were full, new figures show.

Of the 70% of hospital trusts that provided data, more than 40% said they had been forced to shut their doors or divert women to other sites at least once. One in 10 said it happened more than 10 times, according to reports.

The figures were obtained in a freedom of information request made by the Conservatives.

The Government said maternity units sometimes were forced to take action because it was hard to predict demand.

Of 103 trusts providing maternity services that responded, 42% had to close their units or divert women to another site at least once in 2007 because of capacity problems.

The Tories said that of those trusts that had to turn women away, 74% had more than 3,000 births last year, suggesting large maternity units seemed to be more at risk of having to close.

The Tories said University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, one of the biggest maternity providers in England, reported closing 28 times.

A Department of Health spokesman told the BBC diverting women to other hospitals should be the exception rather than the rule.

“It is difficult to precisely predict when a mother will go into labour and sometimes, at times of peak demand, maternity units do temporarily divert women to nearby facilities,” he said.

“When this does happen it is often only for a few hours and to ensure mother and baby can receive the best care possible.”

Supersize v Superskinny – Channel 4

I have to admit to watching the repeat of this programme just the other evening. It’s not my usual viewing, I confess, but someone had mentioned something about it, which meant it had my interest.

A friend had said that she had watched it every week. She is one of those people, who have been unfortunate enough to have been on every imaginable diet known to man. So this type of programme  is right up her street.

One part of the programme had presenter, Anna Richardson trying different diets, including diet pill and of course the fad diets that many people are tempted to do (I think she even had a maple syrup and water diet – imagine that for a week!).

Anyway, the crux of the matter was that at the end of trying all these different things, the one thing that she felt had really helped her was the hypnosis. By the end of the first week she had lost three pounds without too much effort. She felt that because it dealt with the mind, it was able to be effective.

It’s exactly the way that I like to approach weight control. It’s not about being on a diet. In fact, when I say the word ‘diet’, I mean it in it’s true form ie, the things that we eat and drink – not a calorie controlled diet. In my opinion, diets don’t work, and I can say this from experience because up until the point I discovered hypnotherapy, I had been on one for most of my adult life.  When we diet, in a very short period of time, the body enters starvation mode because it thinks there is a famine coming. So the metabolism of the body slows down, burning up less calories. This is why we tend to lose weight most quickly in the first few weeks of a calorie controlled diet, and why after a while, we have to cut down our intact of calories again when a plateau is reached. Of course, once goal weight has been reached and we start eating ‘normally’ again what happens? The calorie intact is higher than that being used by the body, and the weight starts to pile on again – probably more than was lost in the first place. And so continues this yo-yo style of dieting, which does our bodies no good at all.

Using cognitive hypnotherapy and combining it with NLP techniques, I work together with my clients to find the underlying causes to their relationship with food, and together we try to change that. Once the relationship has altered, it can be surprisingly easy to have a different attitude to food, so that it is not longer the obsession that it might once have been. By making sure that we eat consciously, instead of the trance-like way which may have been normal before, I help my clients to be able to eat in such a way that they don’t have the guilt that can sometimes accompanys eating. So it’s not a quick-fix, but over a number of sessions, a changing of habits and mind-sets so that you can get to a point of conscious eating – where you can enjoy eating healthily.

International Women's Day

Friday, March 7th, 2008

On Wednesday this week (5th March) I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a great networking event arranged by Success Network for International Women’s Day.

The theme for this year’s event was ‘Networking and Working Together for Success’. As well as the usual networking opportunities that you might expect, Success Network had worked hard to get together a great line-up of speakers. They included:

  • Keynote speaker, Sue Knight - renowned international consultant and author, who pioneered the use of NLP for people in business and who has been described as ‘bringing the heart and soul to business’.
  • Sharon Connolly - Sharon is a widely known image consultant who has been on national television. She runs the Maximise Group, is founder of the Ladies Who Latte Networking group and partners with Mary Flavelle, entrepreneur and networking queen of Berkshire!
  • Natalie Holliday - speaking about the goal, the challenge and the way to an outstanding sporting achievement - a valuable lesson for all women in business!

Each of these ladies had so much to give, it was both entertaining and inspirational to listen to them as they shared their own experiences with us.

There was a definite theme running through all of the presentations that evening. NLP and coaching in it’s various forms was high on the agenda, giving some great examples of how it might be used and the benefits it can bring. As a Master Practitioner of NLP, I was delighted to hear this, of course, and having Sue Knight have everyone doing some positive visualisation was a lovely way for her to give to the whole group.

Ute mentioned to us that each year they have had this event, it has doubled in size, so all I can say is that, Ute and Mary – you are going to need somewhere much bigger for 2009!

Congratulations to Success Network and all the speakers for such a great evening. As an evening intended to celebrate women’s progress and success in business and inspire us to achieve our full potential – you certainly succeeded!

LadiesWhoLatte has just launched a fabulous new website for its members. It is free to put your details on, or you can pay to have a banner ad if you prefer.

Anyway, suggest you check it out. It makes it much easier for the leaders of each of the groups to be able to keep in touch of all of their members, so I urge you to at least log into whichever group you visit.

And if you have never been to a LadiesWhoLatte networking event, and think it might be for you, then I highly recommended that you visit the site and find out where your nearest meeting is.
